We’re delighted to announce the signing of 157-cap Swedish international forward Sofia Jakobsson on a free transfer, following her departure from the NWSL’s San Diego Wave, subject to the usual regulatory clearances.
The 34-year-old arrives at Hayes Lane with a wealth of top-level international and domestic experience, including national championships clinched in Sweden, Russia, and the United States.
Jakobsson has been a national team mainstay since 2011, winning two silver medals at the Olympic Games (2016, 2020) and two bronze medals at the FIFA Women’s World Cup (2011, 2019).
“It was time for me to find another place to play,” said Jakobsson upon inking her two-year contract.
“I talked with many clubs, but I heard about London City’s plans from the coach and I could see that this is a super interesting project and a great opportunity to make something special together as a group. I have always been in for challenges and I feel that this is a cool challenge and the perfect opportunity to be part of this project.
“I talked with Kosovare [Asllani] and she told me that Michele Kang’s plans were very interesting. What Michele wants to achieve with this team, and in women’s soccer more generally, is great and she’s doing really positive things for women in sport.
“I’ve been through the whole process of women’s football and I can see that she is making a positive impact. My decision to come here was not just about the football part – it’s also that we’re trying to do great things for women’s sport.”
Jakobsson opened her professional career by winning a series of titles in Sweden, lifting the Damallsvenskan in back-to-back years (2007, 2008) and a Swedish Cup (2007) with Umeå IK.
The Örnsköldsvik-born forward joined WFC Rossiyanka in 2011 and made an instant impact by winning the 2011-12 Russian Championship.
Transfers to England, France, and Spain followed, with Jakobsson representing the likes of Chelsea, Montpellier, and Real Madrid, before joining San Diego’s inaugural squad.
Jakobsson’s success continued in the United States, where she helped the Wave win the 2023 NWSL Shield and the 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup.
“This is the profile of player we needed for so many reasons,” said London City head coach Jocelyn Prêcheur. “First, as a striker, Sofia has characteristics we didn’t have before – she likes to attack the space and dribble a lot.
“She is such a talented player and is someone who we really wanted in our team because she has such great experience. She perfectly understands what it means to perform at a high level and we needed this kind of player to guide the team and help develop our project.
“I’m very happy and proud that we convinced Sofia to join us. I’m sure she will bring her experience, qualities, and professionalism, making her a very good example to follow.”
Sofia has joined the Pride – and now it’s your chance.
