Match Report: London City Lionesses 1-1 Newcastle United (08/09/24)

Kosovare Asllani scored the game-tying goal as London City Lionesses shared the spoils with Newcastle United on the opening weekend of the new Barclays Women's Championship season.

Jocelyn Prêcheur handed debuts to Emily Orman, Teyah Goldie, Corinne Henson, Charlene Meyong, Julia Roddar, and Aslanni on his first outing as London City head coach, with matchday minus-one arrival Isobel Goodwin also named amongst the substitutes.

Despite an impressive start from the Pride, it was Newcastle United who broke the deadlock, with Shania Hayles firing into the bottom corner in the 20th minute.

However, London City responded valiantly, forcing opposition shot-stopper Claudia Moan into action within minutes of the opener, before Lotta Lindstrom rattled a first-time effort off the underside of the bar.

The Finnish international was heavily in the play again just moments later, fizzing a cross towards Asllani at the far post, who made no mistake as she converted emphatically from close-range.

Goodwin, a second-half substitute, went closest to finding twine after the break, beating Moan only to be denied by the outstretched leg of Demi Stokes.

London City are back in action next weekend, visiting Blackburn Rovers in the Barclays Women's Championship on Sunday, 15 September.
