Lucy Fitzgerald: 'We're really starting to click'

London City Lionesses climbed to seventh in the Barclays Women's Championship on Sunday [5 November], producing a dominant performance to defeat Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Goals from Danielle Carter, Maddi Wilde, and Lucy Fitzgerald fired Carolina Morace's side into an unassailable lead by minute-20, much to the delight of our No. 17:

After a fantastic win, can you summarise your thoughts on the match?

I’m buzzing. I think that’s one of the first games where we clicked as a team. We played really good football, especially in the first half, and created the most chances of any game this season. We started to bring out the patterns that Carolina has been working with us on in training. Everyone played really well, it was a great performance overall.

Does it feel like it is starting to click, with back-to-back wins on either side of the international break?

Definitely. There were obviously a lot of new players and a new coach at the start of the season, but we’re getting much more comfortable with each other now and understand exactly what Carolina wants. As I said, I think the football was really good today and it felt like we clicked as a group.

Personally, it was a positive afternoon for you – are you pleased to be on the scoresheet?

It wasn’t the best goal, but I’ll take any that come my way!

I think everyone played their part today. Defensively, our counter-press was really good and our backline was solid. It’s great to pick up another clean sheet.

I could’ve had another [goal], but – you know – I’ll take it.

Maddi Wilde was picked as the Player of the Match – what did you make of her performance?

Maddi was quality, she created lots of chances for us in the first half and it was nice to see her score her first goal. I’m really happy for her because she’s been asked to move around a bit, but wherever she has played she has always given everything and done a good job.
