London City Lionesses have been eliminated from the Vitality Women’s FA Cup by Tottenham Hotspur, with the Women’s Super League side rolling to a 5-0 win at Brisbane Road.
The Lionesses started the match on the front foot, forcing the opening exchanges to be played in the attacking half.
London City earned three corners in quick succession before the 10-minute mark, with Sarah Ewens denied by a fine low save by Tinja-Riikka Korpela at her near post.
However, it was the hosts who broke the deadlock after eleven minutes, with England converting Rosella Ayane’s far post cross.
The Lionesses spent the rest of the half working for an equaliser, testing Tottenham’s defence in open play and with set-pieces, but fell further behind just before the break after Mana Iwabuchi’s deflected effort found the back of the net.
Drew Spence added a third to the tally for Rehanne Skinner’s side shortly after the break, poking a rebound into the net from close range.
Spurs were fortunate to score for a fourth time on the 66-minute mark, with Harley Bennett’s attempted clearance looping out of reach for Yanez and into the net.
Substitute Evelina Summanen notched Tottenham’s fifth of the match, slotting her shot into the bottom left corner after smart combination play on the top of the box.
"The first half was really positive," explained interim head coach Nikita Runnacles. "We had two or three opportunities in the first 10 minutes but we couldn't take them. Then, they went down the other end and had a European Championship-winner score the header.
"It's hard to come back from that because of how well we started but now it's about bouncing back next week. Our job is around the league: we'll shift the focus to next Sunday and work from there."
The Lionesses will now turn their attention back to the Barclays Women's Championship, with a home fixture versus Sunderland A.F.C. on the schedule for Sunday 5 February.
