Updated: 1 day ago

London City Lionesses delivered a dominant performance to earn a statement victory against Sheffield United.

In the first of their final five fixtures in the 2024/25 campaign, London City Lionesses powered past Sheffield United with a commanding 4-0 win in mild conditions at Hayes Lane.

London City imposed themselves on the game from the first whistle, with Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah and Kosovare Asllani finding the net in the first half, and Grace Neville and Georgia Brougham sealing the three points in the second half.

It leaves the Pride just one point behind Women’s Championship leaders Birmingham City, with a game in hand on the team above.

The hosts started brightly, nearly taking an early lead inside four minutes when María Pérez’s effort was denied by the brilliance of Sian Rogers. Asllani then tested the Blades' goalkeeper again in the 12th minute, drilling a low shot towards the bottom corner, only for Rogers to make another crucial save. Moments later, Asllani sent a volley narrowly over the crossbar as London City continued to pile on the pressure.

The capital sides persistence paid off in the 19th minute when Boye-Hlorkah broke the deadlock with a stunning long-range strike, driving the ball into the far post from the edge of the box.

Rofiat Imuran, a constant threat down the left flank, nearly doubled the lead in the 34th minute with a bending long-range effort that whistled just over. Five minutes before the break, Sheffield United came close to an equaliser when Maria Farrugia weaved her way into the box, but Teyah Goldie made a last-ditch block to deny an almost-certain goal.

On the stroke of half-time, Asllani doubled the Pride’s advantage, combining with international teammate Sofia Jakobsson. After superb hold-up play, Jakobsson rolled the ball into Asllani’s path, and the Swedish forward confidently slotted it into the bottom-right corner.

London City maintained their attacking intensity after the restart, and Neville produced a moment of brilliance in the 52nd minute, lofting a stunning strike over the goalkeeper from over 35 yards to make it 3-0.

Brougham then capped off the victory in the 90th minute, curling a superb effort into the top corner, leaving Rogers with no chance.

The Pride dominated from start to finish, controlling possession and securing another crucial three points with just four league matches remaining.

Elsewhere in the Championship, league leaders Birmingham City dropped points against Charlton, allowing London City to close the gap to just one point – tightening the race for promotion.

Next Sunday, we travel to Newcastle, aiming to extend our unbeaten league run to eight games.

With only one home game left this season – against Durham, who edged past us earlier in the campaign – we need your support more than ever at Hayes Lane.
