Lois Joel: 'We like to keep things exciting'

Lois Joel produced a standout performance in central midfield as London City Lionesses came from behind to beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 on Sunday [24 March].

Women’s Football Podcast: Congratulations on the victory, you left it late though…

We like to keep things exciting! We fought until the last minute and the team showed great determination over the last three games. There’s a great mood in the camp now and we’re hopeful that we can carry that through the rest of the season.

Women’s Football Podcast: It’s also important that you’ve moved six points clear of the relegation zone…

Yeah, it’s massive for us, obviously every game is like a cup final for us at this point. We’re all confident in our ability and we know that we should be much higher up the table. Hopefully, we’re showing that now – better late than never.

Women’s Football Podcast: Did you always feel that you could get back into it?

I felt that the game was drifting a little bit in the second half, but football is crazy and things can change so quickly. Once we scored the equaliser, we felt that we could get another and that’s what we did in the end. The girls are buzzing.

Women’s Football Podcast: How has it been to play under Remi Allen?

She’s come in and given us a lot of discipline and a bit of oomph and has been a breath of fresh air for us. Sometimes that’s what you need and – as I said – we knew we had the ability from the start and we’re really pleased to have made the progress.

Women’s Football Podcast: How much confidence does this give you going into next season?

This season has been really different for us because the last few seasons have seen London City be in the top three or four. There’s been a lot of change and that should give us the confidence we need as we push to get back to where we want to be next season.

Women’s Football Podcast: Does the arrival of Michele Kang add to that excitement?

Definitely, new ownership is always very exciting. You can’t change everything overnight, but we can hopefully push on with Michele’s backing next season.

London City Lionesses: Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah with the winner at the end, it’s the kind of goal that sums her up as a player…

She’s worked hard and I’m over the moon that she had the chance today. I almost felt like she took too long, but she scored. She had a chance in the first-half where she hit the post out of nowhere. Once she was through on goal, I knew she was going to finish.

London City Lionesses: And it was Lotta Lindström with the other goal…

Bless her, I love Lotta. I’m so over the moon for her because she works so hard in training and has made an instant impact. I’m glad that we could get the win for her today and that she contributed.

We're back at Princes Park on Sunday [31 March]. Don't miss it.
