London City Lionesses will make the short trip to Charlton Athletic on Women’s Football Weekend, with The Valley providing the backdrop for a high-stakes fixture between teams at each end of the Barclays Women’s Championship table.
The Pride sit ninth in the standings with four games left to play, while Karen Hill’s hosts are in the midst of a five-team title fight.
However, both teams have reasons to be optimistic ahead of kick-off on Sunday [24 March], with London City unbeaten in three games and Charlton trailing table-topping Sunderland by only one point.
With that in mind, here is everything you need to know in preparation for our final derby of the season.
Opposition:
The Addicks are serious promotion contenders, with Hills & Co. firmly in the race to claim the Women’s Championship title.
Averaging two points per game over the latest five-match stretch, the South London side are in fine form and could move top of the table with a win over London City.
Following two games without a victory, Charlton bounced back to winning ways last time out, beating Durham 1-0 at Maiden Castle courtesy of Elisha N’Dow’s sixth minute strike.
Kate Longhurst is the home team’s player to watch, with the experienced midfielder capable of producing game-winning plays at both ends of the field.
Previous Meeting:
Charlton’s visit to Princes Park ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Pride, with a Paige Culver own goal and Carla Humphrey’s curling strike the difference between the sides.
Player Preview:
“It's a big game,” explains London City wing-back Lucy Fitzgerald. “We know they're near the top of the league and that it'll be a tough match. Against Sunderland, we showed that we can go toe-to-toe with anyone and get three points against anyone in the league. We're confident in ourselves and we're going to give everything to get those three points.”
Tickets and Broadcast:
The fixture has not been selected for live broadcast by the FA Player, with tickets available to purchase from charltonafc.com.
